Report your car accident to Dubai Police? There’s an app for that

If you’ve driven in Dubai long enough, you must’ve been in at least one accident. The traditional routine is to call the police or go to the nearest police-station, but soon you will apparently be able to report your own minor car accidents using your smartphone.

According to Gulf News, Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi of the Dubai Police said that the smartphone app is set to launch next month, imaginatively dubbed ‘Report Minor Accident from Phone’, that will allow drivers to report their own minor accidents via their phone and receive the police report for the accident via email.

The app, available in English or Arabic, will require you and the other guy, in your separate phones, to enter the number plates for both cars, your licence number, five photos of each damaged car, your email and a few other details to help the police understand what happened. The location is sent automatically to the nearest police station, where an officer will issue and send the report to the drivers as well as their insurance companies.

It is an interesting concept that will also be made available on the Dubai Police website, and it will be equally interesting to see how effective it is in the real world. Apparently an app was launched in March to report traffic violations of others, and it’s proving to be popular since there are rewards for those who report the most violations per month.

  1. Good idea, or a low tech approach that everyone could adopt would be to carry copies of an accident report form (as they do in some EU countries) and fill it out yourselves and send to your respective insurance companies (or police) directly. That works too.

What we really need is an app for reporting other road users talking on the phone, driving dangerously etc. Let the community collaborate closer with the Police on road safety to prevent some accidents too.
Of course, not to be used while driving 🙂

    Which app is this?
