Red Bull Car Park Drift held in Abu Dhabi


The Red Bull Car Park Drift event was held last weekend in Abu Dhabi. Meant to be the UAE Qualifier for the Middle East-wide Red Bull Car Park Drift 2011, there were as many as 25 contestants trying their luck, with Red Bull’s own sponsored driver putting on an occasional show that evening.

The Maserati Trofeo one-make racing championship was launched this week for the GCC region, at an event in Dubai. The series is backed by the Maserati factory in Modena, Italy and will feature up to 16 mechanically-identical Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo race cars battling it out over 12 races across the Middle East.

Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2011 edition is a go


We attended a press conference today at Yas Marina Rotana that marked the launch of the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the local desert rally event that attracts various international and local teams in a race across the inner sand dunes of the Emirates in cars, trucks and motorcycles. Highlights included overtaking a rally-modified Mini Countryman driving on the street, watching footage of previous races, and a hilarious episode where Mohammed Ben Sulayem jokingly got annoyed at being referred to as “MBS”.

As expected, nobody could hold a candle to the Red Bulls in Suzuka on Sunday afternoon as Sebastian Vettel led home team mate Mark Webber by nine-tenths of a second in a gripping race in which the five title contenders finished in the top five places. Vettel’s third triumph of the season, and Fernando Alonso’s third place for Ferrari, 1.8s behind Webber, moves the German into joint second place with the Spaniard, each on 206 points, as Webber moved out to 220 to extend his lead to 14.
