It was only a few months ago that we had seen the Ford Atlas Concept at the 2013 Dubai Motor Show, a thinly-disguised version of the next-generation Ford F-150 truck. Little did we know that it was so close to the reveal in production form. The all-new 2015 model is debuting at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, boasting technical upgrades that are completely new to the American truck segment.
Everybody keeps asking us what’s the best offroader. And we generally dodge this question, because it really depends more on skill than any specific 4×4 model. Even crossovers can go offroad, as we have proven before. But if you are brave enough, you can even take an all-wheel-drive turbo hatchback on the big dunes. Here is a 353 hp Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG on the sand, not just casually strolling, but properly dune-bashing as if it were an offroad buggy.

There were quite a few mini-4x4s around before the Renault Duster popped up in our market and actually proved that these things can sell with the right kind of marketing. Ford is hoping to replicate the Duster’s success with the Ecosport, their very own little SUV.

Mercedes-Benz held their annual AMG Driving Academy event yet again, at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It is that one night of the year where we get to thrash the heck out of various new AMG models, and the slightly new format for this year was better than ever. They packed in so much track-time under the floodlights that several of the others in our media bunch were quitting out of exhaustion by the middle of the evening. We carried on, of course.
