When the Ford SYNC multimedia first debuted over six years ago, it was a huge step forward for in-car tech in general, even if it did have its bugs. We weren’t too keen on using it either, but Ford has improved on it over the years. SYNC is now part of an all-encompassing system called MyFord Touch, and we’re going to see if it’s still at the forefront of in-car infotainment, as we pitch the all-new 2014 Ford Fusion against rivals such as the Toyota Camry, the Hyundai Sonata, the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6.

When we drove the 2014 Ford Fusion last year, it was a prototype being used for hot-weather testing. It had a different engine, and it was roughly put together, but we were ready to put it on our recommended list at once whenever it’d hit showrooms in the future. The original Hummer H1, even in civilian grade, never became a bestseller due to its exotic price for what was essentially a bare-bones truck with a CD player. As such, it is pretty rare to spot one, although we have seen a couple up close. However, those trucks still made an attempt to be civilised. So it piqued our interest more when we saw a true military-grade Humvee in the flesh.

We were invited to an off-road event organized by Eastern Motors, the dealers for Jeep in Al Ain. Called the Jeep Funatic, the event was the first of its kind to be organized in Al Ain, and is similar to the Jeep Jamboree event held annually in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While the Jeepers were expected to roll in their own Jeeps, we were handed over a ride by the dealer. Expecting nothing more (and less) than a Wrangler, we were in for a surprise, as the ride turned out to be a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V6.
