We were recently invited to the regional launch of the 2008 Ford Escape, which has been completely redesigned inside and out. The new Escape comes standard with a 3.0-litre V6 Duratec engine making 200 hp at 6000 rpm and 261 Nm of torque at 4850 rpm, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. It features one of the most advanced safety packages in the small SUV segment, including standard side curtain air bags and AdvanceTrac® with RSC®.

German automaker Volkswagen is celebrating its 70th anniversary, and we were sent a brief history of the company that Hitler once controlled. Dubai Civil Defence got a bunch of colourful Chevrolet and Hummer trucks from General Motors to use as quick response vehicles. I’m not sure what these trucks will be mistaken for on the road, what with so many colours adorning the bodywork of what are supposed to be serious fire-fighting vehicles.
AMG, the well-known performance division of Mercedes-Benz is celebrating its 40th anniversary. AMG was originally an independent tuner company that was gradually acquired by Mercedes-Benz during the 1990s. Since I actually own a classic Mercedes-Benz mildly modded by the original independent AMG, I figured their history would be an interesting read.

Arabian Automobiles, Nissan dealers for Dubai et al, held a campaign recently to find Nissan Patrols with the highest mileage around here. The results were surprising and disturbing at the same time.
