The Volkswagen Touareg has always occupied an awkward niche in the midsize SUV segment. Not quite mainstream, but not quite premium either, it’s left to do battle with everything from Jeep Grand Cherokees to BMW X5s, while even targeting lower-end Toyota Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols in terms of price (and VW admitted as much). Now there’s a new-generation Touareg in town, and its objectives are clearer.
Recently, all SUVs have been losing weight and the all-new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg is no different. Having slashed a significant 106 kilos and filled to the brim with the latest technology, the VW Touareg will join the lineup of MLB Evo platform-based SUVs that include the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and the Lamborghini Urus.
The Touareg is easily one of VW’s best cars at the moment, which is amazing considering it’s half-a-decade old already. It was facelifted a year ago to keep it fresh, and this is the first time we got to look at the “new” one up close.

The American governmental transport safety agency, NHTSA, has ordered the recall of all Volkswagen Touareg vehicles between the model-years 2007 and 2009 to address a factory defect. The fastening struts on the roof-edge spoiler can crack, causing the spoiler to become loose and possibly detach from the vehicle without warning, even though initially the spoiler may feel secure.
