2012 Volkswagen Golf GTI
| The Good: – Torquey engine – Cabin quality and features – Entertaining handler |
The Bad: – Lacks kick at highway speeds – Looks a bit too understated – Brake-pedal feel could be better |

We thought it was impossible, but someone apparently managed to spin a Nissan GT-R, and that too on a drag strip. We have no idea how the grippiest car ever engineered can do that, unless severely messed with.
We’re not quite sure of the order of the words in its name, but the short version is we finally got to drive a Mini Coupe, in Cooper S trim no less.
There are a lot of stereotypes floating around about “which is the best offroader” when it comes to dune-bashing. Many automatically say “Toyota Land Cruiser” or “Nissan Patrol”, with a few naive ones even adding in “Jeep Wrangler” and “Land Rover Defender”, generally by people who’ve never been off-road in anything more than a desert-safari ride. The truth is there is no such thing as the “best offroader”. But if we were to make a list, we’d put the Nissan Xterra Off Road edition above any of the aforementioned trucklets.
The slow-selling GMC Terrain crossover has no place in a truck-centric brand, but it is here to stay, and the girlified line-up expands further with the 2013 GMC Terrain Denali.
Last week, we drove the 2012 Lexus LX 570. A couple of years ago, we drove the 2010 Lexus LX 570. And four years ago, we drove the 2008 Lexus LX 570. So what has changed over the last four years?
The 2012 edition of the Middle East Motor Tuning Show ran from the 15th to the 17th of March at the Expo Centre in Sharjah. Easily the UAE’s largest show of its kind, it seems to be gaining in popularity, with various firms showing up to display their wares, but this time around, an entire hall is dedicated to personal cars. A drifting arena outside and a simulator inside round out the on-site activities, alongside live demonstrations of truck modifications and airbrushing. With input from Salma Sultana.
| The Good: – Very luxurious ride – Cabin space and features – Decent offroader |
The Bad: – Very expensive – A bit bulky to handle – Average power and economy |
The last few weeks were pretty awful in terms of weather. Daily sandstorms took a toll on cars in Dubai. It was even worse when, you think the worst of the dusty weather is over so you wash your car, and then there is yet another dust-storm the next day. Frustrating indeed. And it took a toll on a car’s performance too.
The 2012 Geneva Motor Show on March 6th and 7th, quite possible Europe’s largest auto show even though Switzerland has no functioning automotive industry, yet again plays host to a number of production debuts and inquisitive concepts. New models include the VW Golf GTI Cabriolet, the Volvo V40, the Ford Fiesta ST, the Lexus RX and the Hyundai i20. Ironically, the concepts outnumber the real debuts this year. These include the Bentley EXP 9 F 4×4, the Infiniti Emerg-E, the Nissan Hi-Cross, the SsangYong XIV-2 and more.
